Carnival-owned Costa Cruises resumes in Europe after coronavirus shutdown

The world’s oldest cruise line set sail again after suspending business globally in March due to COVID-19.

Italy’s Costa Cruises, a subsidiary of Carnival Cruises, resumed its luxury cruise ship Costa Deliziosa Sunday, departing from Trieste in the country’s Northeast region with a ship full of Italian guests, the first passengers on board since the pandemic began, the company announced.

The cruise line has implemented a number of health and safety protocols, like staggered check-ins upon arrival at the terminal in Trieste, temperature checks, a health questionnaire and, for anyone with suspected cases or symptoms, a COVID-19  antigen rapid swab test, according to a report from CruiseHive.com. Travelers would not be able to board unless they tested negative for the virus. Crew members onboard the ship also underwent a health screening and were quarantined for 14 days before departure.

The weeklong voyage with only Italian guests will visit Bari, Brindisi, Corigliano-Rossano, Siracusa and Catania.

Costa Deliziosa is the cruise line’s first ship to set sail for destinations primarily in Europe. It’s the first in the company’s fleet of four cruise ships to resume travel since COVID-19 became widespread in March. The company’s Costa Diadema will leave Genoa on Sept. 19.

It has been anything but smooth sailing for the travel industry during COVID-19, and particularly for the cruise sector, with a number of liners delaying scheduled departures until 2021. Cunard Line, a British cruise line also part of Carnival Corporation, last week announced it would postpone operations until March 25, 2021 after previously announcing its return date for November 2020.

The cruise line also announced in a statement that sailings scheduled for Queen Elizabeth in and around Australia, Japan and Alaska between March 26, 2021, and Dec. 13, 2021, will all be canceled, with guests eligible for a full refund or credit for 125% of the original cost.

Laura Ingraham explored Joe Biden’s response to President Trump’s reported comments disparaging fallen soldiers Tuesday, saying the Democratic nominee is trying to “capitalize” on the disputed Atlantic magazine report to “muddy the waters” on his foreign policy record.

The Ingraham Angle” host first cited a March interview Biden gave to MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell, in which the former vice president claimed he voted for the Iraq War in order to “try to prevent a war from happening.”

“It is completely false,” Ingraham responded. “And anyone who has any momentary memory of what was happening at the time in 2002 and 2003 knows that. This is why Biden has sought to capitalize on the now-debunked Atlantic magazine smear against the president, despite the fact that the most incendiary claims in that piece have been disavowed by at least 21 current or former administration sources on the record.”

The host explained that Biden hopes to “drive a wedge” between Trump and the military because it is a key constituency that has otherwise been loyal to the incumbent. She then recalled a 1998 Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing in which Biden said the only way to solve the problem of Iraq’s program of weapons of mass destruction was to “require guys … in uniform to be back on foot, in the desert taking the son of a, — taking Saddam [Hussein] down.”

Oddly, Ingraham pointed out, “the impact of the wars” Biden supported were not mentioned at the recent Democratic National Convention.

“Biden claims that Donald Trump has disrespected the troops?” she asked rhetorically. “A pathetic drive-by smear and a desperate attempt to cover up his own lies about his own history of rubber stamping whatever the pro-interventionist types wanted.”

By contrast, Ingraham claimed, “the military-industrial complex was never comfortable with Trump, despite the massive increase in spending he pushed back in 2017 … The generals knew he asked uncomfortable questions, like why are we still in Germany 75 years after World War II ended? And why are people more worried about Russia today than China? And why don’t NATO nations contribute more for their own military defense again?”

By spending time outdoors, far removed from other people and hunting, Gov. Kristi Noem suggested in a video posted to her social media accounts this week.

“This is how we do social distancing in South Dakota,” she wrote above a 15-second clip that shows her with a shotgun and an orange cap and vest walking through a vast cornfield — before shooting a bird out of the sky.

“Less COVID, more hunting, that’s the plan for the future,” she says in the video.

The video comes months after she said, “We won’t be social distancing” at President Trump’s July 4 rally at Mount Rushmore and following the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in her state where hundreds of thousands of people showed up, few of them wearing masks or following social distancing guidelines.

Earlier this month, North and South Dakota saw some of the fastest-growing per capita new coronavirus infection rates in the U.S.

According to a disputed study by researchers at San Diego State University, almost 20% of the country’s new cases in August were linked to the Sturgis event. That would be more than 266,000 cases – more than half of the attendees of an event that hosted more than 460,000 people.

Noem blasted that claim as “fiction” earlier this month.

“Under the guise of academic research, this report is nothing short of an attack on those who exercised their personal freedom to attend Sturgis,” she said at the time. “Predictably, some in the media breathlessly report on this non-peer reviewed model, built on incredibly faulty assumptions that do not reflect the actual facts and data.”

Snopes, the fact-checking website, labeled the claim of more than 250,000 coronavirus cases being linked to Sturgis “unproven.”

State health officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A Florida family found themselves in an unusual situation when their 2-year-old son got his training toilet stuck around his neck. The family filmed the removal process, which required a saw and apparently a toddler who is amazingly good at standing still for his age.

In the footage filmed by Abbie, she asks her son how it happened, but unfortunately, he doesn’t appear to respond with anything but giggles.

In the footage, Reuben’s father can be heard asking if the seat is clean, to which the mom thankfully responds yes.

Apparently unable to simply remove the seat, the dad grabbed a saw and started cutting (with the blade pointed away from Reuben’s face). While Reuben had some trouble looking up and away from the saw, his father was able to cut the seat apart and free Reuben without any injury.

Hopefully, Reuben learned his lesson and doesn’t do whatever it was that he was doing to get his head stuck in the toilet.

In other toilet news, Tokyo recently saw its first see-through toilets installed last month.

The newly designed restrooms are built with opaque walls so that, when the bathroom is empty, people can see inside. They’re also designed so that when someone locks the door from the inside, the walls turn solid, allowing the user to do their business in private.

Jordan pushes resolution to limit Supreme Court justices, blasts Democrats

Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, submitted legislation to Congress late Tuesday that would prevent any party from “packing” the court and limit the Supreme Court to nine justices.

“Any attempt to increase the number of Justices of the Supreme Court of the United States or ‘pack the court’ would undermine our democratic institutions and destroy the credibility of our nation’s highest court,” Jordan wrote in the resolution.

The congressman’s latest bill comes amid partisan fighting in Washington following the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

President Trump announced on Twitter Tuesday that he will be declaring his nominee for the Supreme Court Saturday, a move that Democrats have called unjust based on Senate Republicans’ claims in 2016 that a Supreme Court justice should not be replaced during an election year.

PRESIDENT TRUMP PLANS TO NAME SCOTUS NOMINEE ON SATURDAY

Senate Republicans refused to review former President Obama’s nominee, Merrick Garland, after the passing of former Justice Antonin Scalia in 2016, citing concerns over a justice being confirmed before Americans had the chance to vote on who would win the presidency in the upcoming election.

“Democrats can’t win elections, the Republicans control the Senate, we control the White House,” Jordan told Fox News’ The Evening Edit, Tuesday night. “The Senate’s going to move forward with that nomination just like the Constitution says,” he added.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who opposed Obama’s nomination has made it clear he will push forward a nomination by Trump, making it the third Supreme Court nominee submitted by the president.

“The American people should have a voice in the selection of their next Supreme Court Justice. Therefore, this vacancy should not be filled until we have a new president,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., tweeted, echoing the phrasing used by McConnell in February 2016.

In the legislation, Jordan included the threats made by Senate Democrats following the GOP’s decision to push forward with confirming a Supreme Court justice.

A tweet by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., was included which said, ‘‘If Sen. McConnell and @SenateGOP were to force through a nominee during the lame-duck session—before a new Senate and President can take office—then the incoming Senate should immediately move to expand the Supreme Court.’’

Another tweet by Sen. Ed Marky, D-Mass., which pointed to what Democrats believe highlights Senate Republican hypocrisy, was incorporated in the resolution as well. Though Jordan omitted the first portion of the tweet which said, “Mitch McConnell set the precedent.”

‘‘No Supreme Court vacancies filled in an election year. If [Senate Majority Leader McConnell] violates it, when Democrats control the Senate in the next Congress, we must abolish the filibuster and expand the Supreme Court.’’

Though the Supreme Court is supposed to remain nonpartisan, there are currently five members that have been confirmed under Republican presidents, while there are only three now that were confirmed under Democratic presidents.

The White House and Congress generally choose justices who they believe will interpret the Constitution favorably to their policies.

“Previous attempts to increase the number of Justices to the Supreme Court of the United States have been rejected and widely condemned by individuals of both political parties,” Jordan said, refering to President Franklin Roosevelt proposed Judicial Procedures Reform Bill of 1937, which sought to expand the Supreme Court form nine justices to 15.

There are currently no limits in the Constitution on the number of justices that are permitted in the Supreme Court, though only nine justices have sat on the bench for the last 151 years.

Jordan also quoted Bader Ginsburg in his legislation as having said, ‘‘I think it was a bad idea when President Franklin Roosevelt tried to pack the court’’, and that ‘‘[i]f anything would make the court look partisan, it would be that.”

If Republicans were able to push through another Supreme Court justice it would be six to three in favor of conservative judges appointed.

“The Federal judiciary is insulated from political influence…an attempt to expand the Supreme Court purely for political purposes threatens the independence and integrity of the Supreme Court,” Jordan wrote.

He added that “packing” the court with one party would “undermine our democratic institutions and destroy the credibility of our Nation’s highest Court.”

A man in Chicago known as the “Dreadhead Cowboy” was arrested Monday after riding a horse on the Dan Ryan Expressway, a report said.

The horseman, whose real name is Adam Hollingsworth, 33, was captured on video surrounded by motorcycles and with police trailing behind. He was charged with reckless conduct, disobeying a police officer, criminal trespass to state-supported property, police said.

He was escorted by a phalanx of motorcyclists as he rode his horse on the southbound lanes of the expressway, sometimes at a gallop, for several miles. On a Facebook Live feed while he was riding, Hollingsworth said he wanted everyone to know kids lives matter.

“Until we understand kids lives matter, nothing else matters,” he said on Facebook Live before riding onto the freeway. “We’re fitting to shut down the whole Dan Ryan.”

In the past, Hollingsworth teamed up with Mayor Lori Lightfoot to advocate for filling out the Census, but her office distanced itself from the “stunt” in a statement.

“There is a right way and a wrong way to call attention to issues of great importance and this stunt was decidedly the very wrong way,” the statement said, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

State police said they received multiple calls around 4:20 p.m., about a man riding a horse south at 47th Street. Officers arrived at 71st Street and saw Hollingsworth “surrounded by multiple motorcycles and vehicles in the local lanes” on the interstate, according to a statement by Illinois State Police.

“He shouldn’t have been on a horse on the expressway,” a state police spokesperson told the paper.

Hollingsworth had previously met with state and Chicago police on Sept. 9 about a planned protest on the Dan Ryan Expressway. His request was denied because authorities said it was dangerous and illegal “for pedestrians to access the expressway in that manner,” according to state police.

After he was placed under arrest, troopers secured the horse, which was bleeding from the left hoof, had an injury on the right hoof, as well as, sores on the right side of its body from the saddle, the statement said.

At that time, state police said another man, identified as Darron Luster, 55, of Chicago, attempted to “forcefully gain control of the horse.” Officers asked him to release the animal, which Luster refused, and he was placed under arrest for obstructing and resisting arrest, according to state police.

Luster refused medical attention and stated he would only go inside a squad car, “not [an] ambulance,” police said.

Charlamagne Tha God and iHeartMedia launch Black Effect Podcast Network

Charlamagne Tha God has been doing his own podcast for a few years now and awhile ago he wondered why there were no podcast networks.

When that started happening, he had another question.
“I thought ‘Why can’t we do that with a Black podcast network,'” the popular radio host recalled to CNN in a recent interview.
So, Charlamagne Tha God came up with one.
    He has partnered with iHeartMedia to launch The Black Effect Podcast Network, with the goal of “bringing together the most influential voices in black culture for stimulating conversations around social justice, pop culture, sports, mental health, news, comedy and more.”
    The replay podcast of his popular and nationally syndicated New York City radio show, “The Breakfast Club,” will serve as the network’s flagship podcast.
    The slate of 18 announced will include podcasts featuring comedian and actress Jess Hilarious, social justice activist Tamika Mallory, and attorney Eboni K. Williams.
    Charlamagne Tha God has become one of the go-to interviewers for those looking to get their message out to Black America.
    Known as the most outspoken co-host on “The Breakfast Club,” he’s posed tough questions to everyone from Kanye West to Democratic presidential and vice presidential nominee, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
    He has curated the network’s lineup of podcasts and many will be hosted by women.
    Charlamagne Tha God said he’s “always been surrounded by nothing but Black women, personally and professionally” and set out to amplify their voices.
    “It’s just about being intentional, like actually being intentional with the voices that we choose to put on various platforms and just being intentional about empowering the voices that need to be heard,” he said. “Shut up, get out of the way and let Black women lead and that I truly believe they’ll take us to the promised land.”
    His goal is that the podcast network be like what BET was to cable television in the 1990s with “hopeful, raw, unapologetic, diverse Black content and a place you can come to be educated, enlightened, and entertained.”
    No one understands that vision more than Bob Pittman, chairman and chief executive officer of iHeartMedia.
    Pittman is a media veteran whose resume includes helping to launch MTV where he served as CEO.
    Both he and Charlamagne Tha God said the podcast network was in the works well before the racial reckoning currently happening, though they say launching it couldn’t have come at a better time.
    “What, we’ve all been hit in the face with in the past few months I think had had a very important and profound impact,” Pittman said. “I think everyone who cares about society and cares about our neighbors and our fellow humans was looking for what can I do to contribute? And although this was certainly on the path for us, we all feel really good about it as a company.”
    Pittman said the planned content for the network in many ways transcends race and notes that many of their hip hop stations have an audience which is 20 to 25 percent White.
    That demographic needs the Black Effect Network as well, he believes.
    “You can provide a bridge to understanding,” Pittman said. “Some place that people who want to understand what’s going on and want to participate in the Black culture, that they’ve got a good source for it and a really robust source for that kind of information, that kind of interaction.”
      Providing an alternative to the cultural blind spots that some people may have is imperative, Charlamagne Tha God said.
      “[The network] will help people see and realize that Black people aren’t monolithic,” he added. “We have so many different interests.”

      Coast Guard veteran Steven Biles says his training kicked in and helped him get “in the mindset needed to move into action” as he drove past a wildfire in Tacoma, Wash., and stopped to help families escape from their homes.

      “I’m glad I was there because had I not made the urgency and put that kind of pressure on everybody to get out they may have felt they had more time and who knows what could have happened,” Biles told “America’s Newsroom” on Monday.

      Biles can be heard on videos he took last Wednesday saying, “Everybody get out, please right now” as part of a home was engulfed in flames.

      “I’m so sorry, ma’am. You have to grab your stuff. We’ve got to go,” he also said in the dramatic video.

      He then asked if anyone else lives in the home.

      Speaking on “America’s Newsroom” on Monday Biles said he saw the fire as he was driving home and then “ran into that smoke not sure what to expect.”

      “All I knew is there may be people there that need help,” he continued. “I realized that the fire department hadn’t arrived yet and I had to do what needed to be done.”

      Biles said as he got to the first home, a fire was “growing in the backyard.” He noted that neighbors and bystanders were “panicking and it was a very frantic situation.”

      “When I approached the back of the house there was a neighbor there who was trying to put it out with a garden hose,” Biles said. “I ran to the front of the house to try to get the hose on for them to get some water.”

      “It was a very, very chaotic scene,” he continued. “I could tell something had to be done very quickly and that I needed to make sure that those homes were all cleared out.”

      Biles said the people on scene were “very responsive to my actions and to my commands that I gave,” noting that they were “sort of frantic at that time and they weren’t sure really what to do.”

      “There were people that were even still trying to get back into the home,” he said, adding that he discovered that a woman was still inside the burning home and “as soon as I got to the door to help them get out was when they realized that they were within minutes of losing their home completely to be engulfed in flames.”

      Biles said he returned to the scene the following day and “everybody seems to be doing OK”

      He said two adjacent homes were damaged by fire and that he learned that the woman who lived in the initial home that caught fire “was hospitalized briefly, but she seems to be stable now.”

      Biles explained that the Coast Guard taught him how “to act under pressure.”

      He cited a specific training that members of the Coast Guard go through that helped him with the situation he encountered last week.

      He explained the training is a “simulation of firefighting on board the ships and during that time they put you in a scenario kind of similar to this where there’s a large raging fire.”

      “It’s a simulated, controlled setting, but it puts you into that stressful environment so you can confidently operate under that kind of stress,” Biles continued. “So I believe that that helped to get me in the mindset needed to move into action and to coordinate the effort of everybody to prevent any injury or get everybody to safety.”

      Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday suggested that convicted rapists undergo surgical castration when he was asked about the recent gang rape of a woman on a highway.

      Two armed men raped the woman on a deserted highway after her car ran out of gas late at night last week near the city of Lahore, the capital of the province of Punjab. Police said she had locked the car doors and phoned for help, but the attackers broke a window and dragged her outside, where they raped her in front of her children.

      One suspect, whom police identified as Shafqat Ali, was arrested Monday. The second suspect, Abid Malhi, remains on the run.

      Khan, in an interview with local TV station 99 NEWS, said Malhi was involved in another gang rape in 2013. He said he was looking into surgical castration, saying the country needed new legislation to permanently sterilize those linked to such crimes.

      “The way there is first-degree, second-degree, third-degree murder, this [rape] should be graded in the same way, and when there is first-degree [rape], castrate them,” Khan said. “Operate on them and make them unable to do this.”

      Khan first proposed public executions when speaking to the station, according to Reuters, but said officials told him the punishment could jeopardize Pakistan’s preferential trade status granted by the European Union.

      Khan’s comments come as news of the assault sent shockwaves throughout Pakistan. Scores of protesters descended on the streets in several cities, including Islamabad and Karachi, denouncing attacks on women.

      Gang rape is rare in Pakistan, although sexual harassment and violence against women are frequently reported. Nearly 1,000 women are killed in Pakistan each year in so-called “honor killings” for allegedly violating conservative norms on love and marriage.
